While the Manvel Lady Mavericks flashed an impressive amount of leather in their Class 5A best-of-three area softball playoff series with Barbers Hill, it was the Lady Eagles’ bats that ultimately provided the telling blows.

Hill used the combination of an extra inning tally and an early second game explosion to deliver a 1-0 and 11-0 season-ending sweep of the Lady Mavs last weekend.

Manvel closes its season at 16-13-2, while the Lady Eagles advance to play Splendora in the regional quarterfinals later this week.

Thursday’s opener in Manvel turned into a pitcher’s duel between the Lady Mavs’ circle duo of Sydney Macias and Addison Greak and Hill’s Jessica Mullins.

The Lady Eagles put their first runners on base against Macias in the top of the first inning, but the Manvel infield quickly came to the rescue with a pair of web gems.

Freshman shortstop Peyton Wilsey made a spectacular diving grab to her left to rob Hill’s Hayley Freudenberg of a hit. Third baseman Alexis Uresti then gloved a high bouncer off Rebecca Miller’s bat with the senior stepping on the bag and throwing to Karissa Schneider at second base for another force play to complete an inning-ending 5-4 double play.

Manvel sophomore Brittany Hood also delivered an impressive diving catch of Stephanie Niemann’s shallow fly ball in left field to open the third frame.

However, neither team was able to muster much offense with the Lady Mavs missing out on golden opportunities to dent the scoreboard in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.

Greak reached on a one-out walk in the seventh and Schneider smashed a grounder off Miller’s chest at first with the ball landing in foul ground. While both runners reached the next base safely as a result, Miller threw out pinch runner Devin Lofton, who attempted to advance all the way to third base on the play. Mullins then retired Nicole Blaise on a grounder to short to end the inning.

After the Lady Eagles touched Greak for the game’s lone run on Kaitlyn Dutton’s RBI single in the top of the eighth, Macias (who had four hits for Manvel in the series) doubled with one out to center field during the frame’s bottom half to put the potential tying run in scoring position.

Macias got as far as third base on Wilsey’s grounder and Uresti walked to put runners at the corners, but Mullins got Brianna Garcia to ground out to second to give Hill the 1-0 series lead.
