The Alvin ISD School Board recently approved the hiring of Jhared Marshall as the new varsity girls’ basketball coach at Manvel High School.

Marshall replaces Bryan Harris, who left after seven years at the Lady Mavericks’ helm, to take the assistant athletic director/head girls’ basketball post at Barbers Hill High School.

Marshall started his sideline career as the basketball coach and lead trainer at the Larry Micheaux Basketball Academy in Sugar Land (2011-2013) and was also an assistant at Willowridge (2012-2014) for two years and Katy Morton Ranch for one year (2014-2015) and the lead varsity assistant at Vista Ridge for one year (2015-2016).

After guiding the Taylor boys’ hoop program to the bi-district playoffs in his initial head coaching gig in 2017, Marshall then became the associate head girls’ basketball coach at Round Rock Cedar Ridge with the team advancing to the regional quarterfinals in both 2018 and 2019.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign graduate is the fourth new head varsity coach to the area for the 2019- 2020 school year. Alvin High School’s additions include Sasha Blake (volleyball), Chris Iles (boys’ basketball) and Aaron Leth (girls’ soccer).

Harris, who was a University of Tennessee graduate and also a practice player for legendary coach Pat Summit’s Lady Vols’ squad, helped deliver the most successful chapter in Lady Mavericks’ hoop history. Harris’ teams won at least 25 games each year and also reached the 30-victory or more plateau on three occasions.

“What sticks out the most is the kids always coming in with that hoka hey mentality,” Harris said. “I also received the opportunity to work with amazing individuals on my staffs.”

With a roster featuring future Division I collegiate standouts Brianna Turner (the National Gatorade Player of the Year), Jordan Hosey and Rangie Bessard, the 38-2 Lady Mavs cruised through the regular campaign and playoffs, posting victories over La Porte (85-22), Hightower (72-51), North Shore (60-41), Cy Ranch (56-33) and Cy Woods (58-42) to advance to the State 5A Tournament in Austin.

Manvel then crushed Plano West by a 69-38 count in the state semifinals to face powerhouse Duncanville for the 5A championship (the biggest UIL classification in Texas at the time). While the Pantherettes were riding a monster 105-game winning streak and had overcome a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Manvel 56-50 earlier in the season at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational Classic in Pasadena, the Lady Mavs turned the tables on Cathy Self-Morgan’s squad in the finals. Trailing 49-42 with a little under four minutes left in the contest, Manvel rallied with a furious 16-4 fourth quarter run to come away with a 58-53 triumph, the school’s first team state championship in any sport.

The Lady Mavs also went 37-4 this past season and advanced to the Region III finals for the second time in school history in March with playoff victories over Houston ... Click here to read full article
