Miscues haunt Mavs in 8-6 loss to Galena Park

Gilberto Rios and Sergio Rodriguez drove in two runs apiece and the Galena Park Yellowjackets also took advantage of back-to-back errors during a six-run fifth inning to pin an 8-6 defeat on the Manvel Mavericks Friday in 23-5A baseball action in Manvel.

The loss knocked the Mavericks (14-9 overall, 7-3 in district) out of first place and into a second-place tie with Elkins and Galveston Ball in the league standings. Santa Fe edged Elkins 3-1 in Missouri City Saturday to take over sole possession of first place in 23-5A.

Manvel also rebounded Saturday with a 17-3 run-ruled home rout over Willowridge.

“We were bringing (pitcher) Damon (Fernandez) back from injury and he ran out of gas,” Mavs’ head coach Kelly Kerlin said. “(Reliever) Myles (Simmons) has been there for us throughout his career. He had a rough one and we kind of fell apart defensively.

“We made some miscues we haven’t made all season.”

Manvel closed within 8-6 on RBI singles by Eric Benitez and Warren Laster in the bottom of the seventh inning, but also had a runner thrown out trying to advance to third base on Laster’s hit to end the game.

Isaiah Walker singled with one out in the Mavs’ first inning and after stealing second base, scored the game’s initial tally on Kane Mendieta’s run-scoring single to left field. After Park tied it in the third, Benitez scored all the way from second base on George Ducommun’s bunt hit for a 2-1 MHS lead in the fourth.
