Mavs land eight players on 23-5A baseball team

The Manvel Mavericks received eight player selections and improving Shadow Creek collected almost half of the individual hardware to head the area picks to the All-District 23-5A Baseball team.

Mavs’ third baseman Isaiah Benavidez joined senior pitcher Jonathan Jones, senior outfielder Warren Laster and senior first baseman Kane Mendieta on the first team.

Laster batted .427 with 38 runs scored, 17 RBI’s, five triples and three doubles, while Jones went 7-2 on the mound with a 1.37 earned run average and hit .419 with a team-leading 27 RBI’s and nine doubles. Mendieta also carried an impressive .319 average with 20 RBI’s and six doubles and Benavidez batted .300 with five doubles.

Jones and Laster were also both selected to play in the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association’s senior all-star game June 19 at the University of Houston, while Benitez and Simmons will play in the junior all-star contest June 18.

Sharks’ junior shortstop Ben Greer was named the offensive player of the year and SC freshman pitcher Sebastian Soliz earned newcomer of the year accolades.

Greer paced Shadow Creek with a .410 average, 13 RBI’s and 11 runs scored and Soliz delivered an 1.25 ERA from the hill to complement .a 341 average on the offensive side with 13 RBI’s.

Second team selections for Manvel included junior catcher Eric Benitez, senior pitcher Damon Fernandez, junior shortstop Myles Simmons and freshman outfielder Isaiah Walker. Sharks’ senior designated hitter Jordan Jackson also gained a second team nod, along with senior outfielder Elijah Taleff-Scott.

Manvel went 18-12 overall for the season and just missed advancing to the playoffs by one game. Shadow Creek defeated Galena Park, who went on to advance to the postseason.

Other first team selections included catchers Daelan Caraway (Willowridge) and Armando Soto (Elkins); infielders Trent Raschke (Galveston Ball) and Edgar Salinas (Galveston Ball); outfielders Connor Higgs (Texas City), Drake Jackson (Texas City), Austin Lawrence (Galveston Ball) and Camron Yeldell (Elkins); pitchers Carlos Calvillo (Galena Park), Adrian Carroll (Elkins), Rome Shubert (Santa Fe) and Dylan Whitehurst (Galveston Ball); designated hitter Cotton Rasco (Texas City) and utility player Andrew Perez (Elkins).

Catcher Joshua Blankenship, of regional quarterfinalist Santa Fe, collected most valuable player honors and the Indians’ Ronnie Wulf was tabbed as the coach of the year.

Galena Park’s Aaron Rodriguez was named the defensive player of the year.

After dispatching Houston Furr in the bi-district round, Santa Fe eliminated defending state champion Port Neches- Groves in the best-of-three area playoff series.
