Kobe Coker fired a seven-yard scoring pass to Jaiden Howard with no time remaining to lift the Crosby Cougars to a dramatic 49-47 upset victory over the state ranked Manvel Mavericks on Friday night at Cougars Stadium.

Howard, the Cougars’ starting quarterback, lined up at receiver on the game’s final play with a mere second showing on the scoreboard clock and grabbed Coker’s fling on a fade route. Manvel (1-1) compiled an impressive 603 yards of total offense with 539 yards coming on the ground and 29 first downs. Ladarius Owens exploded for 311 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns, while Garrison Johnson rambled for 185 yards on 13 carries and five TD’s.

Manvel was also guilty of four turnovers (three fumbles, one interception), though, which turned a 28-17 halftime lead into a 43-34 deficit with 8:47 remaining in the contest.

Johnson broke loose for scoring runs of two and 42 yards to regain the upper hand for the Mavs at 47-43 with 2:32 left, but Crosby held the ball the rest of the way on their 13-play, 57- yard game-winning drive.

The Mavs jumped to a quick 21-0 first-quarter lead behind Johnson runs of 13 and seven yards and Owens’ 66-yard burst to the end zone.
