Devon Achane couldn’t have picked a much better evening for the Marshall Buffaloes to deliver his best Vince Young imitation.

On the other hand, it kept coming at the worst possible times for the Manvel Mavericks.

The 5-9 junior rushed for 210 yards on 24 carries and five touchdowns and added two more scores on long kickoff returns, as Marshall outlasted Manvel in a 52-51 early season overtime classic on Friday at AISD’s Freedom Field.

Achane also reached the end zone twice on two-point conversion runs with the latter dash providing the difference in the extra period.

Garrison Johnson also had a stellar night for the Mavs with 127 yards on 20 carries and four TD’s, while Ladarius Owens provided 123 yards on 20 carries and one TD. However, early missed opportunities ultimately came back to haunt Manvel (2-2 overall, 1-1 in district) in this 11-5A Division I gridiron showdown between two state ranked teams.

Manvel signal caller Josh Coltrin (10 of 20 for 220 yards, two TD’s) connected with a wide-open Jude Mayon from 17 yards out two plays later and Luis Moreno booted the extra point through the uprights for a 7-0 Mavs’ lead with 5:51 left in the opening period.

However, things started going south for Manvel during the next few minutes. After Achane exploded 88 yards with the ensuing kickoff to immediately tie things, the Buffs blocked Moreno’s 33-yard field goal attempt and recovered a Manvel fumble during the next MHS possessions. Marshall took advantage of the turnover to lead for the first time at 14-7 on Achane’s five-yard run early in the second quarter.

While the teams proceeded to trade scoring blows the rest of the period with Coltrin’s 14- yard fling to Eric Hebert and a 39-yard run by Owens doing the honors for Manvel, the Buffs still carried a 29-21 advanta... Click here to read full article
