While Friendswood managed to stay within striking distance of state-ranked Manvel for almost 12 minutes of Thursday’s Class 5A Area Girls’ Basketball Playoff match-up, the Lady Mavericks ultimately employed the afterburners and left the Lady Mustangs in the dust.

Mckinzie Green pumped in a game-high 28 points and Anessa Dussette provided 14 points, as the Lady Mavs rolled to a 65-33 triumph at Alvin High School’s Competition Gym.

The victory set up an all- AISD regional quarterfinal earlier this week with Shadow Creek topping Galveston Ball 59-47 in their area playoff game Thursday night at Santa Fe High School. The teams played late Monday at Wheeler Field House in Sugar Land. Game results from Manvel- Shadow Creek will run in the Weekend Alvin Sun.

In Thursday’s affair here, Friendswood trailed only 18-13 midway in the second quarter, when Manvel (35-3) suddenly took flight. Dussette struck for a pair of breakaway layups off steals and drilled a three-pointer to make it 29-15 with 1:52 left, while Green closed the period with seven straight points to increase the margin to 36-15 at intermission.

The Lady Mustangs never recovered from the onslaught.

“In the second quarter, I thought we were a little quicker going,” Lady Mavs’ head coach Bryan Harris said following the game. “In the first quarter, they were great and then I think we wore them down a bit.

“Our quickness really took over. We weren’t disciplined at all in the third quarter and the fourth quarter was hard to watch. I think kids, once they realize they’re up 30, kind of shut it down.”

Despite the struggles, Manvel continued to pad its cushion in the third. Deja Williams delivered a trey, while Joy Chanslor and Green both converted steals into uncontested drives to the hoop on the other end.

Manvel led 53-24 after three periods, allowing Harris to mix his reserves in with the starters the rest of the way.

Despite nine points from Green during the opening period, the Lady Mustangs gave Manvel everything they could handle early on. Ashlyn Mason led the way with four points in the quarter, while Nicole Nash and Sallianne Roher added buckets to complement Ashlyn Ryall’s three-pointer, leaving Friendswood with just a 15-11 deficit during the initial eight minutes.

Manvel swept the regular season series with Shadow Creek, but Harris expects a much tighter contest in the third meeting between the area and 24-5A rivals.
