Mavs season end in area playoffs

Santa Fe broke loose with four runs in the top of the 10th to send the Manvel Mavericks to a tough 9-6 extra inning and season-ending defeat to complete a sweep in the best-of-three 5A Area Round Baseball Playoff series Saturday night at Barbers Hill High School.

Manvel closes the season at 15-15 overall, while the Indians advance to face Barbers Hill in the regional quarterfinals later this week. The defeat also spoiled an impressive comeback by the Mavericks, who overcame a 5-0 Santa Fe lead with four runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth.

Ladarius Owens smacked a bases-loaded double to highlight the four-run fifth for Manvel and Jackson Sweeney delivered an RBI single to tie it at 5-5 in the sixth. Sweeney had three hits for the Mavs in the contest.

The Indians totally dominated the series opener on Friday with Rome Shubert firing a one-hitter in a 15-0 game one triumph. Santa Fe blew the game open with six runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Isaiah Walker had the lone hit for Manvel. Shubert also had a big evening at the plate by going 2-for-4 with four RBI’s.

In other area baseball playoff action, the Shadow Creek Sharks also saw their season come to a close with 4-0 and 3-2 defeats on Friday at Port Neches- Groves in the-best-of-three 5A area playoff series.
